Evaluation for Silhouette Music Video (990 Words)
My specific role in the
production was to direct the actions on-stage so that everything ran smoothly
and accordingly. My original ideas that I intended to implement into our music video were somewhat left behind as I came to the conclusion that it would be more
complicated than I had originally thought at first. Ousama and Elizabeth were
attracted by the idea of a performance music video consisting of silhouette puppets and from then on, a group was formed.
I, Ousama and Elizabeth began to gather ideas whilst being inspired by other music videos on Youtube that had specific similarities to our ideas. Our ideas were inspired by videos such as 'What a Wonderful World Shadow Puppet', 'Why Stop Now Spit Like Busta (Randal), 'Potter Puppet Pals: The Mysterious Ticking Sound' and 'The Four Peters' from Family Guy. The concept of the original idea I intended on using was using a track from The Q4 named 'One of These Days' because most of the track sounded like a soothing, jazzy instrumental but then the chorus was going to be related to the story and the narrative because the chorus was "One of these days, and it won't be long, you're gonna search for me and I'll be gone." Then the actual footage of the music video would be consisted of 2 silhouette puppets that are in a relationship and one leaves the other by walking into the horizon (by dragging the hand puppet away from the cloth therefore making him small and smaller). Whilst re-thinking over my idea several times, I came to the conclusion that it would be a little too complicated and time-consuming. Before thinking that the original idea would be complex, I decided to think of a Plan B just incase something went wrong and that 'Plan B' was the idea of a performance music video consisting of silhouette puppets that would be simple yet creative. After discussing the idea with fellow group members, we decided that this was the best alternative. The 'Plan B' was to use the song by Louis Armstrong 'What a Wonderful World' and the footage would be 2 silhouette hand puppets singing the song by lip-syncing with one puppet positioned on the left and the other puppet was stationed on the right as the song progressed. Then myself through the middle whilst looking towards the sky towards the end of the performance music video. After we had thought of the idea we intended on using, we began to gather the equipment needed to proceed with the development of the music video. The equipment that was needed was: a large piece of white cloth, a Canon DSLR camera, an SD card, a medium-sized tripod, 2 hand puppets (Crocodile and Monkey), a bright light, a pole and 2 beams to balance the cloth. The majority of the progression ran smoothly and accordingly although we did experience some difficulties whilst ordering the hand puppets online on Amazon.com because I had paid for express delivery and that would take 2 days to arrive; I had ordered it on Monday and we needed them for Wednesday before Barrington's class had began. Whilst at college, my Mother had called me from home telling me that the hand puppets had arrived, Therefore during break I had to go back home from college to pick up the puppets. I then arrived 10-20 minutes late to Barrington's class, which had halted the production of our music video.
The strengths that we had encountered during the production of our music video were that we felt that we had synced the music well with the lip-syncing of the puppets and myself. Another strength we encountered during the process was the fact that it didn't take very long to record the footage, because it had only taken 2-3 takes to get the footage spot-on. Another strength that I myself saw was that during the editing, Ousama had decided to make the video black and white so that the light wouldn't change during the footage and I felt that this gave the music video an old-fashioned perception that looks nostalgic and that it had been originated in the 1940s-1950s.
The weaknesses of the music video were that I had thought that it was more time-consuming than it should have been given the simplicity of the idea. Even though the process of recording was relatively quick, I had felt that we had the opportunity to have sped up the process of the production of the overall music video.
I think the things I enjoyed most were that it was very much a team effort and it was nice to work in a group where we all had the same vision and understanding. The other things I enjoyed were that we picked a song that was fairly easy to remember because we all had to listen to it in our spare time so that we memorised it word-for-word so when we began filming the lip-syncing, it would become unproblematic and straightforward.
The majority of the responses and feedback that we had received were positive such as some people saying that it was creative and the minority of the feedback was that some people didn't understand the story although it being a performance music video with progression.
In conclusion, I think that our music video exceeded my expectations in terms of the positive feedback we received from fellow students in the class. Whilst looking back at our music video, there was always a thought in my mind that it lacked serious effort and commitment compared to others like Anton's video and Sidique and Ash's video. When I compare our music video to others, I think that it lacked effort in making it seem as professional as possible. Honesty. Overall I did enjoy the experience of production and the weaknesses during the experience have given me an opportunity to learn from my previous mistakes.
